firefly-banner“Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!”  If that line means anything to you, then you’re probably going to be very pleased with what you’re about to read.   Firefly Online, the official continuation of the Firefly universe, is coming next year to Android and iOS.  Read on for all the shiny details.

In case you haven’t figured it out by now, I’m a huge Firefly fan.  It’s one of my all time favorite television shows, and I mourn its absence from my life every day.  It’s a special kind of sadness shared by all Firefly fans.  A potent mix of loss, bitterness, emptiness, and a healthy portion of burning anger towards the FOX executives who treated the series so badly, they cold probably be charged with criminally negligent homicide.  But there is reason to rejoice, fellow Browncoats.  Firefly is making a comeback.  And while it might not be in the medium we’d prefer, this new game looks like it might be something special.

Revealed earlier today at the San Diego Comic Con (or as the cool kids call it, SDCC), the game is being developed by QXMi and Sparkplug Games for release next year.  Entitled Firefly Online, it’s being called a “social role playing game” and will be available for iOS and Android phones and tablets.  In the game, you’ll take on the role of a ship captain who has to recruit a crew, find paying jobs, and keep flying.  The game will feature ship customization, and the ability to conduct commerce with other players, even if they’re on a different platform.

Now I realize that probably doesn’t sound like the most ambitious project in the world.  True, a 40 hour action RPG with AAA production values starring the original cast of the series would be preferable to a mobile “social” game, but I dare you to watch the following trailer and not feel a twinge of nostalgic excitement.

See?  It was the music, wasn’t it?  Yeah, that’s what did it for me too.  There’s already an official website up for the game, at the appropriately titled keepflying.com, where you can create an account, and learn a little more about the game.
